When marketing is not working, the instinct is to add a person. Another freelancer, another specialist, someone for the channel that feels neglected.
It almost never works, and the reason is arithmetic rather than talent.
Good freelancers do not wait to be told what matters. They form a view, because that is what you are paying for.
So the SEO specialist optimises for search. The social freelancer optimises for engagement. The designer optimises for how it looks. Each is doing excellent work against a different definition of success.
Add a fourth and you have four strategies, not more capacity.
Each new person needs briefing, reviewing and chasing. That work lands on the founder, who was already the bottleneck.
So the fourth freelancer does not add a quarter more marketing. It adds output and subtracts founder time, and the founder was the only person holding the whole thing together.
I meet businesses that have been through several suppliers and concluded the suppliers were the problem.
Occasionally true. More often each one was handed a different brief, judged on a different number, and replaced before anything compounded. The common factor was not the agencies.
Before adding anyone, write down who the business is for, what it wants to be known for, and what happens when someone is interested.
Then brief the people you already pay against it, in the same words, and see what changes. If you do decide to bring someone in, this is how I would choose them. Most businesses find they have more capacity than they thought and less direction than they assumed.
If nobody in the business can hold that, the question is not which freelancer to add. It is whether you need direction, capability or capacity, because those are three different purchases and only one of them is another pair of hands.
Most founder-led businesses are not short of marketing activity. They are short of a decision about what matters. The Founder-Led Marketing Scorecard takes about three minutes and tells you which of seven areas is holding the rest back.
